*INFORMATION FOR PARENTS ON PRE-KINDERGARTEN ADMISSIONS*

We have received a number of questions from parents about the new
pre-Kindergarten admissions process for 2008-09 and expect that Parent
Coordinators and District Family Advocates have heard and will continue to
hear similar questions. To assist them in answering parent questions, we've
tried to provide answers to a few of the frequently asked questions on the
pre-kindergarten admissions process below.

* *

*How is the process for pre-Kindergarten admissions for 2008-09 different
from the process in previous years?*

For 2008-09, we are rolling out a more parent friendly, centralized process
which standardizes procedures and timelines so that all students have a fair
chance to attend pre-Kindergarten. Families will know their options to make
informed choices about pre-Kindergarten. This process replaces individual,
school-based admissions processes which were previously in place

* *

*How does the process work? How are students selected for programs?*

For Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) programs in public schools, parents
will complete and submit an application and send it to a central location.
The Office of Student Enrollment will be responsible for the enrollment and
placement process and will use the following priorities to make assignments.

Siblings will be given first preference for admission to Universal
Pre-Kindergarten. All other students will be admitted according to the
following order of priority:

   1. Within-district residents

    1. Zoned students when applying to their own school
      2. District students whose zoned school has no Universal
      Pre-Kindergarten; district students with no zoned school
      3. Zoned students applying to a different zoned school

   1. Out-of-district residents (within borough)
   2. Out-of-district residents (out-of-borough)

 * *

For UPK programs in community-based organizations (CBO), the admissions
process remains the same as in previous years. Families who wish to apply
to a CBO program must obtain the application directly from the CBO or DOE
website (http://schools.nyc.gov/ChoicesEnrollment/PreK)

* *

*What is the timeline for public school Universal pre-Kindergarten programs?
*

   - Monday, March 24: Application packets available online at
   http://schools.nyc.gov/ChoicesEnrollment/PreK
   - Friday, March 28: Application packets delivered to schools
   - Friday, April 18: Applications due (postmarked)
   - Week of May 19: Families receive admissions letters and can begin to
   register students at schools

 * *

*Where can parents find information on the new pre-Kindergarten admissions
process, including application materials?*

   - Please direct parents to visit our website:
   http://schools.nyc.gov/ChoicesEnrollment/PreK. Here you will find the
   most up to date information on the admissions process. Application
   materials will also be available beginning Monday, March 24.
   - Please also feel free to share the attached Pre-Kindergarten Flyer
   to get the word out. Translated versions will be available online soon.
     On Monday, March 24, schools will receive flyers to distribute to
   parents and to post in local communities.
   - By Friday, March 28, schools will receive application packets with
   additional information. Included in these packets are a directory of
   Universal pre-Kindergarten programs in public schools and CBOs, an
   application for public school programs, and step-by-step guidelines for
   applying to public school programs. Application materials will also be
   available online beginning next week.
